Five things I know about style: Joe Corré

This article is more than 13 years old
Joe Corré on men wearing make-up and why he loves the French Resistance

1 I don't really care what people think of the way I dress. My mum [Vivienne Westwood] used to dress me as a child. At seven I'd hang outside the sweet shop – very aware that the other kids were laughing at me – in a sheer black pleated top with a transparent pocket with a picture of a pin-up girl inside. I thought it was very rock 'n' roll.

2 I'm drawn to unconventional clothes. Pieces that have a touch of femininity make you look more macho: think Elvis Presley in his gold suit.

3 Make an effort. It's about the way you put clothes together. Considered, rather than thrown together, and referencing historical figures and eras. Today I'm working "Joe Corré meets French Resistance".

4 I've discovered the benefit of a bit of make-up on men. It makes a big impact – a little flick here, a dot there. I like eyeliner, eyebrow colour and gold eye shadow. My childhood heros wore make-up: Bowie and Marc Bolan.

5 I'm predictable in what I like seeing women wear: stilettos, stockings, pencil skirts – a tailored look that accentuates their natural form. Androgyny is not for me.
